Prof. Mushlin Writes Editorial for NYT Calling for Prison Reform

Pace Law Professor Michael Mushlin and Michele Deitch, a lecturer at the University of Texas, Austin, published an op-ed in “The New York Times” calling for independent oversight of New York State prisons.
They cite the deplorable conditions in the prisons and note that situations are not much better in other areas of the country. Professor Mushlin, an expert in prison reform and the effects of solitary confinement, recently testified before the NYS Assembly Correction Committee.
“While we are witnessing a movement for increased police accountability, the need for transparency and accountability is even more urgent in the nation’s jails and prisons, given their closed environments and lack of cellphones and body cameras to capture abusive encounters,” reads one passage of their editorial.
