Alisha Faherty placed first in this year’s NYSBA Professor William R. Ginsberg Memorial Essay Contest. Her article is titled: Tapped Out: How Newark, New Jersey’s Lead Drinking Water Crisis Illuminates the Inadequacy of the Federal Drinking Water Regulatory Scheme and Fuels Environmental Injustice Throughout the Nation. Alisha wrote this paper last year for the Pace Environmental Law Review, and focused on the Safe Drinking Water Act and the lead drinking water crisis in Newark, New Jersey. The paper describes NRDC’s lawsuit against the City of Newark (Newark Education Workers (NEW) Caucus et al. v. City of Newark, New Jersey et al., No. 18-cv-11025 (D. N.J. June 26, 2018 – case is still pending and has been temporarily stayed due to the pandemic) for violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule.

Alisha noted that when she found out she won, she was excited and grateful and she hopes that this article brings more public awareness to the environmental justice movement.
