Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University Congratulates Alumnus Phil Halpern '80 on Nomination to the Federal Bench

Philip M. Halpern, graduate of the class of 1980 from Pace Law, has been nominated by President Trump to serve on the federal bench for the Southern District of New York. Mr. Halpern is currently the Managing Partner at Collier Halpern & Newberg, LLP in White Plains and has been a member of Pace Law’s Board of Visitors for more than two decades. His nomination now proceeds to the U.S. Senate for a vote.

“Phil was an outstanding student in the first class I taught at Pace Law School during the spring semester of 1978,” said Professor Jay Carlisle.  “He impressed me so much that I hired him as my first research assistant. Phil’s research and writing skills were superb and he worked harder than any assistant I have had in my 40 years at Pace Law School.  Phil will be an excellent federal district court judge.”

With more than 90 reported decisions and more than three and a half decades of experience in representing individuals, corporations and Fortune 500 companies, Philip M. Halpern has extensive trial and appellate experience and a strong commitment to client advocacy. Currently, his practice focuses on commercial litigation, estates, employment litigation, real estate litigation, and securities litigation. He has been certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a civil trial advocate and a civil pretrial advocate, and has been selected as a Super Lawyer every year since 2008. In addition, Mr. Halpern is an Adjunct Professor at The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University where he teaches a class entitled, "The Anatomy of a Trial: The Burden of Proof," which deals exclusively with trial skills. He is also writing a textbook for the class which will be available next year.

Mr. Halpern graduated magna cum laude graduate of Fordham University, where he majored in economics and is a graduate of Pace University School of Law where he obtained his juris doctor. He began his legal career in 1980 as a law clerk to Federal Judge Irving Ben Cooper in the Southern District of New York. He is admitted to practice law in the states of New York and Connecticut and regularly appears in the federal and state courts in those jurisdictions as well as nation-wide. He has taken cases to successful verdict in more than a dozen states.

Mr. Halpern’s numerous accomplishments have been recognized with awards from the Westchester County Business Journal, American Diabetes Association and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley. In 2006, be was presented with Pace Law School’s Distinguished Service Award at its annual Law Leadership Dinner.
