Course Number: LAW 786 FP (Field Placement) & LAW 786SS (Seminar)
Course Credits: Fall and Spring 5 Credits (4 FP, 1 seminar); ULSR; Summer semester: 6 Credits (5 clinical, 1 academic)
Students accepted into this program will be placed in the legal department of a corporation in the metropolitan New York area. Students will be exposed to the various ways in which law is practiced “in house.” In a weekly seminar, students will learn the unique lawyering skills needed to work in an in-house environment and learn from their experiences at their placements. Each student will produce a major piece of writing and keep a weekly journal. Students are required to work at their field placement 16 hours per week. Prerequisites: Corporations and Partnerships (general corporate placements) or Intellectual Property Survey (IP placements). Permission of the professor, based on the student’s application and interview, and the student’s actual placement in an approved legal department, are required. Summer only: Students are required to work at their field placement 40 hours per week for 10 weeks.
