Critical Race Theory

This course explores intersections between race and law. Race impacts people, institutions, politics, culture and the economy. Critical Race Theory is a way of looking at the role that law and legal institutions play in defining and maintaining group-based classifications, especially race. We will explore the intellectual origins of Critical Race Theory and its challenges to both liberal and conservative approaches to race and discrimination. We will consider the theoretical promise of Critical Race Theory, its application to the law and its practical and theoretical limitations. Prerequisite: Constitutional Law
