Haub Scholars Program

Program Description

The Haub Scholars Program is a scholarship and mentorship program for students pursuing careers in environmental law, broadly defined. Made possible by a generous gift from the family of Elisabeth Haub, this is a highly-selective program for students with outstanding credentials and a well-articulated passion for pursuing a career in environmental law. Haub Scholars have the opportunity to meet with key environmental leaders, attend special events, receive focused mentoring as they plan their careers in environmental advocacy, and participate in environmentally-oriented international experiences. The inaugural class of Haub Scholars, including three 1Ls and two 2Ls began in Fall 2016. Over time, we envision a vibrant network of Haub Scholar alumni who, long after graduating, remain committed to advancing knowledge, collaborating on solutions to pressing environmental problems, and energizing environmental leadership in their communities, their nations, and the world.

Haub Scholars will work closely with the program faculty supervisor to develop their interests and to identify networking and job opportunities. Each scholar will also be matched with a mentor from the faculty based on specific subject matter interest. In keeping with Elisabeth Haub’s own commitment to international environmental law and diplomacy, each scholar will have the opportunity to participate in at least one international experience, either taking a course abroad, participating in an international moot court, or serving as a representative as the Elisabeth Haub School of Law and an international conference such as the annual congress of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

During each summer Haub Scholars placed with a governmental or NGO externship through either the New York City or Washington DC externship programs will receive a small stipend of $500 to assist with summer living expenses. Haub Scholars will also have guaranteed summer opportunities in one of the many environmental centers on campus including the Land Use Law Center, the Environmental Litigation Clinic, the Food and Beverage Law Clinic, and the Energy and Climate Law Center.

Haub Scholars are also expected to engaged in some type of environmental community service, which could include, among other things, work in a public interest environmental organization (including any of the law school’s clinic) or active participation in a student group.

• Academic excellence 
• Commitment to a career in environmental law (broadly defined)
• Commitment to the goals of environmental protection and sustainability
• The Haub Scholars program welcomes applications from students of diverse backgrounds and identities

Application Process

Interested applicants should submit a 1-2 page statement of interest in the Haub Scholars Program as part of their application to the law school.
