Anglo American Legal History

Anglo American Legal History

Course Number: LAW 692
Course Credits: 2
The growth of the law as a social/political institution (first to ensure royal power, then to protect individual rights) and the development of the legal profession are studied through the use of both primary and secondary sources. The development of the common law that provided both stability and flexibility and the growth in importance of statutes are discussed. Rather than following an inclusive, chronological approach to legal history, the emphasis is on illustrative periods and events from pre-Norman England to the present, exploring the social and political forces behind various movements in the law. Particular focus will be on the in tandem development of law and equity.
