Outside Scholarships for Law Students

This listing of scholarships have been sent to various administrative offices at Pace Law School through regular mail or email. It represents a small sampling of scholarships that can be found through research, local bar associations and other legal resources.

The AAJ Women for Justice Education Fund’s 2012 Mike Eidson Scholarship
Amount: $5,000
Criteria: The Scholarship, traditionally given in the amount of $5,000, is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs’ lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.

2012 American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize
Amount: $5,000
Criteria: Writing competition designed to encourage outstanding scholarship that “promotes the ideals of excellence, civility, ethics and professionalism within the legal profession,” the core mission of the American Inns of Court.  Authors must submit an original, unpublished essay of 10,000 to 25,000 words on a topic that addresses issues of legal excellence, civility, ethics and professionalism.

The American Judges Association Annual Essay Competition
Amount: $3,000, $1,500 and $1,000 for the top three papers
Criteria: Any student regularly enrolled in and attending classes at an accredited law school in the United States or Canada is eligible to enter. Submission of a paper, with one cover page and the completed entry form constitutes entry.  Essays must be under the topic of “Is it constitutional for a legislative body to require a DNA test for all persons arrested and charged with a felony?”

University of Connecticut School of Law Student Legal Writing Competition
Amount: $750, $500 and $250 for the top three papers
Criteria: Scholarship fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. Twenty awards will be made to entering first-year students and may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during each student’s time in law school.  Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarship and not on the law school they plan to attend.

Biunno Scholarship Program of the Essex County Bar Association
Amount: (4) $2,500
Criteria: Open to students with disabilities who are residents of NJ. Factors include financial need, law school achievement, and the commitment to practice law.

The 2012 Tannenwald Writing Competition
Amount: $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500 for the top three papers
Criteria: Open to all full- or part-time law school students, undergraduate or graduate.  Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic may be submitted in accordance with the Competition Rules.
