Robert E. Michael

Prof. Robert E. Michael is the Managing Member of Robert E. Michael & Associates PLLC, a boutique law firm that represents clients in a variety of areas dealing with problem situations, with a primary focus on cross-border workouts and bankruptcies, representing offshore corporate clients either with claims against, or an interest in investing in, U.S. entities in financial difficulty. Prof. Michael, a graduate of Brown University and New York University School of Law, is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and is probably the only person to have headed a Workout/Restructure Department in a commercial bank (Manufacturers Hanover), an investment bank (Paribas Corporation), and a law firm (Windels, Marx, Davies & Ives), and was also a partner of Morrison & Foerster, based in New York City. He was recently appointed the inaugural Chair of the newly created Committee on Middle Eastern and North African Affairs of the New York City Bar Association.  

Prof. Michael is also a former Chair of the Committee on Foreign and Comparative Law of the New York City Bar Association and is a longstanding Member of its Council on International Affairs. He created and is leading the City Bar's initiatives in studying and expanding the understanding of Islamic Law; and in 2010 had the distinction of having been the first non-diplomat ever invited to address the 58 Ambassadors of the Organization of the Islamic Conference at the United Nations, speaking on Islamic Finance in Relation to Capitalism and Socialism.  He is also the co-author of Iflas and Chapter 11 - Classical Islamic Law and Modern Bankruptcy, a landmark article in The International Lawyer on Islamic bankruptcy law.
