Initiative for Professional Development of Scholarship

 

Several years ago, the Pace Law School Faculty adopted a statement of “Expectation of our Members.”  In that statement, we affirmed our commitment to teach with excellence, engage in legal scholarship to promote law as a learned profession, and actively participate in the self-governance and life of the law school and the broader community.  Each of these expectations is equally important and essential to the ongoing vitality of our Law School community.  At the same time, improving our school’s reputation among our academic peers is an urgent priority.  One of the ways to achieve that goal is through quantitative and qualitative changes to our scholarly productivity and placement.  The following initiative is intended to support that goal. Over the course of the next few months, I also will explore initiatives for the professional development of teaching and service.

Availability of Reduced Teaching Load

Effective with the Fall 2010 semester, a faculty member may request a reduced teaching load for two (2) consecutive academic years, with such teaching load being 3 courses or approximately 9 to 10 credits per year.  Decisions to award a reduced teaching load are discretionary, and will be made by the Dean in consultation with the Academic Dean and the Dean for Scholarship and Faculty Development.   Factors that will be considered include, but are not limited to, the instructional needs of the school or whether the faculty member already has a course remission for another purpose. 

In exchange for the reduced teaching load, the faculty member must receive, by the end of that two year period, offers to publish two (2) different scholarly articles in either (i) a main journal at a Tier 1 or Tier 2 law school or (ii) a specialty journal at a "Top 10" law school or (iii) a peer-edited or peer-refereed journal.  

If a faculty member receives a reduced teaching load and subsequently fails to meet the publication requirements in a timely fashion, except in extraordinary circumstances, the faculty member will be ineligible to apply for a new summer research grant for the immediately following year and will be required to “make up” the course load from which he or she was relieved.
